If you are like most people, the month of January finds you dreading the tighter fitting clothes and regretting all the excess calories you ate during the holidays. Former FDA Commissioner Dr. David Kessler is here today to share some interesting results of his research into how we seem to eat more and more and what we can do to take charge of our health.

Yes I know this is like feeling like a beached whale to put it bluntly. I wish it would work for me I have tried cutting back. Dieting, whatever and never seem to lose much. i know it didn't come on over night but to see a reduction of 2 lbs at least a week would be nice. I have about 60 lbs. to lose.

Dear Joan, don't think of the 60 lbs. Rather take it week by week and 2 lbs a week is wonderful! At least you will weigh 2 lbs less on Friday and if you just keep it up over the weekend another 1 lbs on Monday! Baby steps can also bring you to your goal, as where you do nothing your weight stays the same or increases.

I've read this book and I love it! It contains some shocking and revealing secrets of the fast food industry! I'm not sure if it will help me lose weight, but it for sure helps me NOT to go to the fast food joints!

Actually, Joan (and others), losing 2 lbs a week is not healthy for your body. A healthier goal for you would be to lose 1 lb a week. You can look at the link on this website that connects you to MyPyramid.gov to show you how to do just that- lose 1 lb a week! The "trick" is cutting out 500 calories a day (either by eating less or exercising more, or both) and if you were to try to lose 2 lbs a week you would be cutting out 1000 calories a day. The body does need a certain amount of calories every day to perform its functions. I hope you take this all into consideration, along with anyone looking to lose weight this year. I always remind myself, it took more than a year to put the weight on, so if it takes a year to take it off- then that is a consequence I need to live with.

Actually, a 1-2 lb. weight loss per week is healthy because you don't have to actually cut back that many calories..that's just a theory. Most of the initial weight loss is actually water weight! Especially if you have a lot to lose and are just starting out. Sometimes, I will see my clients lose 10 lbs the first week because they are carrying so much water!! By the third week, it starts to slow to a 1-2 lb loss. Yes, it takes 3500 kcalories to burn one pound of fat, but when you lose weight, it's water, fat and even muscle, that's why the kcalorie theory doesn't jive. Forget calories and just be minful of what you're eating. I recommend "Eat, Drink and be healthy" by Walter Willet. Cheers!

I lost almost 70 pounds in one year and kept it off. This may sound crazy, but I was diagnosed as diabetic. This bothered me so much that I spent about 40 hours on the internet studying diabetes, what can be done to control it and what nutrition was needed. I then went through my cupboards and gave away anything that was not "smart". I was left with one can of refried beans. Then I went shopping and learned to read labels. I went good fiber, no sugars and "white" (pasta, bread, flour, rice, etc). I made a permanent change in eating habits and became a label reader. Also gave up fast-foods. Not only did the weight come off, but my diabetes is under control with NO medication any longer. It takes some discipline, but try it.

Joan: Don't be discouraged. I have tried every diet in the world too. I finally tried weight watchers and it is working for me. It is teaching me how to eat correctly and it is livable. I am not advertising for them, just telling you my experience. I have lost 15 lbs in 10 weeks. And that is through the holidays! Try it, it might work for you.

I have lost a total of 8 pounds this week just by exercising and not eating breads or sweets and eating more veggies. I have been exercising 45 minutes a day now for at least 4 days a week, most of the time 5 days a week, because I'm just a stay at home wife. I need to lose about 100 pounds and that will put me weighing at 145 pounds, which will make me still a little overweight, because I'm just 5'2. They say the Atkins Diet is one of the healthiest diets that you can do. Because you eat alot of fruits and veggies and meat. I suggest eating lean meats though, like chicken or turkey and stay away from fatty meats. I'm also thinking about just using Misses Dash on food instead of salt. A little salt is fine but if you get too much of it it makes you retain water and shoots your blood pressure up. And my dad has high blood pressure and heart problems, so I have to watch it. I didn't on purpose try to lose 8 pounds in 1 week, actually in two or three days. But it just happened. I've been eating crock pot pinto beans, broccoli and cheese, grapes, chicken and one day I ate some homemade soup. I've ate a banana or two here and there and I have been eating apples and have eaten a little bit of salad. I been drinking caffeine diet coke, which I need to start drinking more water and I plan on getting flavored water, instead of drinking plain water. That way, I can be drinking more water than I have been. But, anyway I have just been trying to eat low fat stuff like that and exercising 45 minutes a day and it just started dropping off. It helps if you eat a good healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner. I ate some left over broccoli and cheese this morning for breafast and a piece of skinless chicken and now I'm fixing to eat some grapes. I know it's a weird breakfast, but I look at it as, whatever works and whatever is heatlthy. I have been having alot of issues with my body and my health so, I'm just trying to do whatever it takes to lose it. Because ever since I've gotten so heavy I have had nothing but troubles. No Joke!!

I agree with Lori, I lost 20 pounds in 10 weeks with weight Watcher, I find it a life changing style rather than diet, Now I can control my weight even If I put back few pound, I can lose them without any suffering, weight watcher thought me to know how to be displent and control my diet, because you eat smarter when you count points.
