To find the 'read' version, you have on Transcript. I found the article very informative.

I agree with you Bob, I cicked on the transcript because audios (and videos) bore me, and got to what looks more like a sales-ad but no transcript! Hoax? Trap? Besides, to lower cholesterol it's simple: old fashioned oats. And as for the cholesterol being the bad guy ... even docs are starting to doubt!

| Found it, Thanks Barbara :) I was a bit puzzled that the idea of canned beans was ok - they're mostly full o sugars and are highly processed. Same with "a bowl of soup" which , if canned rather than home made is a sugar-bomb + other chemicals.
I use psyllium husk, but not the metamusil sweetened kind, the real deal.
OK article, but nothing new. |

I didn't know that the fiber added in food is different from the natural one! That's shocking to me!!!! So how do I tell if the food companies added the good or bad fiber?

The sound track was good and explicit. I think that most of us know that eating beans, oats, etc. are the way to go. Most young people grab on the go, not giving thought to what you put in your mouth is like money in the bank tomorrow. If you put in the good stuff you will give your heart a break and if you fill up with the junk then your heart and arteries may be logged with fat deposits. I try to eat well; do I always succeed no. But I eat fruits, veggies, cereal and the like. Unfortunately I do not always get it right.

Jenna, if fiber is added, it's most likely the isolated fibers Dr Brill and I talked about. You can also check the ingredient list - inulin and cellulose are isolated fibers.

I think the name of article is not exactly right because according the interview all categories of fiber is good for health.

I always know there are different kinds of fiber. But I didn't know about the isolated fibers too! And I didn't know not all fiber is good for heart either. I think I'll definitely check out Dr Brill's book! It just confirms that natural foods are always better. I guess I can save $$ from buying those expansive "health foods". This is a great topic! Thanks

Canned beans???? Loaded with sodium??? Does the fiber benefit outway the high sodium content?

Arnie, I think that just confirms the point that going for natural food is better... naturally ;)

There is no bad fibre. The soluble fibre Dr. Brill discussed was good for heart health, but all the other fibre (including inulin-the isolated kind) is still really good for your digestive system health to prevent things like colon cancer and keep you regular.

Bad fibers are the ones that go in easy and comes out hard, or was that hardly comes out? :) Just joking. But kidding aside, drinks lots of water with an increased fiber intake!

I'm with Arnie. Is the sodium in canned beans still there after they are rinsed? Also, how does one make oatmeal (which I've always hated) palatable?

is their any harm to take soy in case of hypothyroidism?

Re priyya's question regarding soy and hypothyroidism. I have been trying to find that out forever. My doctor doesn't seem to know and I have read so many contradictory articles. Finally I checked the Synthroid web site and they say that soy will inhibit the absorption of the meds if eaten within 4 hours of taking the meds. Another article says to limit the intake of soy to twice a week. So, I've decided to try the twice a week...and at least 4 hrs. after meds. Nobody really seems to know the answer to this.

There isnt any "good" and "bad" fiber. I think the title of this article is confusing. I was also a little confused when she said that water will help you digest fiber, being as though fiber does not get digested in the body. This is why it's good to do your own research.

I totally agree with Ebony....you must do your own research and be pro-active about your own health. There is so much controversy in the area of nutrition, that its important for each person to make some judgements for themselves, but based on the sensible information that is out there.

I've been diagnosed as having IBS. I was told to take fiber tablets but nothing about what foods to eat. Anyway, I'm in the process of finding out what foods trigger the uncontrollable stoolage and which ones cause no stoolage at all. Any suggestions?Sorry for the graphic language.

I actually bought this book a year ago when I had total cholesterol of 240. In a matter of weeks, I had a new total cholesterol of 160 and all the other numbers were great, too. My doctor was just stunned. Janet Brill knows her stuff. Canned beans are very nutritious--just make sure you rinse them well to get rid of the majority of the sodium.

Dinah I've had IBS for 30 years and kind of figured out what foods really set me off, but still had to take Imodium every day just to work, go to church, etc. However, after I started the Cholesterol Down diet, I began to notice that it wasn't as big a problem. Now I have no problems 95% of the time. It wasn't just the trigger foods, it was the overall quality of my diet that made such a huge difference.

I still don't know if taking a fiber supplement is ok. I've resently started taking a powder that you mix in your water is this actually helping?
