@ Ivy: its not necessarily how much you weigh but how much of your weight is fat mass. Also, should provide a height measurement since that is a major factor to determine if you're overweight. @Zeena P: Weight gain/loss is based purely on physics. To lose weight, you need to expend more Calories than you are eating. The best way is through increasing physical activity (taking stairs, parking farther away, walking more, etc). Also reduce the intake of Calorie dense foods (which are typically the best tasting ones)

how do i calculate the calories in my food using a tin of lyles golden syrup as an example

Carbohydrates aren't necessarily a problem unless they're simple carbohydrates (sugars, syrups, honey, molasses). If you can use a different type of oil (canola, vegetable) it would be better than palm or coconut oil (tropical oils). What you could try is to get a pedometer (not very expensive) and monitor how many steps you take per day. 10,000 is a recommended goal || A pretty good website for finding nutrition facts on a lot of foods is www.nutritiondata.com

While measuring calories is a bit tedious for calculating intake, it is probably one of the best ways to control your caloric intake. However, an alternative I recommend is to note (write down, or mentally note) what you eat on average for a few weeks when your weight is stable +/- a pound or so (usually just water weight). From there, you can either maintain your intake and increase your exercise, decrease your intake and keep the activity level the same, or you can decrease the intake and increase the exercise. What you're looking for is about a difference of 300-500 calories per day (a good hour of moderately intensive cardio exercise, or eliminating a small meal). The fundamentals of weight management is Calories out versus Calories in. Nearly all success stories of losing weight and keeping it off change both sides of the equation (less intake and more expenditure).
